Capital Campaign
History and Purpose
By the 250th Anniversary of the Society in 2006, the Scholarship Fund which had grown to $2 million had been allocating $15,000 to $20,000 per year to each of its scholars. To those serving the Scholarship Committee, it had become clear that these amounts were inadequate and did not cover the cost for graduate education at first class American and Scottish Universities. A more realistic figure would be and annual amount of $35,000 to $40,000 per student. Therefore in an effort to carry out the overall goals and ambitions of the Society, the Board of Managers made the decision to proceed with a major Scholarship Fund Campaign, to raise at least One Million Dollars.
The Challenge
Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York is accepting the challenge to raise the funds required to enhance the prestige of the Scholarship Fund and feels certain its members and supporters will respond to this challenge. While retaining its essential character as the patron of all good things Scottish, and encouraging a sense of camaraderie among members, the Society plans to grow in quality, with enterprises, in reaching out to the many Scots in the local area who should be members of Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York, and in most cases would not be opposed to membership, but who have not been energized to take action and apply.
The Society, in today’s world, must be a base of action: a source of energy that will respond to and interact with the interests of its members and with the realities of life. It must reflect the basic mission of the Society – to be a pillar of support for those of Scottish heritage, to promote Scottish causes and to cultivate the culture and history of the Scottish people – while being sensitive to the actual needs of the day, and of its members. It must do what it can to energize its members to be proud of their Scottish heritage and honored to be a member of Saint Andrew’s Society.
Functioning under this mandate, it is incumbent upon the members of today to challenge themselves and take action to make the 250th Anniversary Scholarship Fund Campaign successful in every way as it endeavors to have the Scholarship Program strive for excellence.
Progress
As of June 2009 the Society has raised over $704,692 towards it goal of One Million Dollars. These funds have come from both members and supporters of the Society. If you would like to support the Campaign please refer to our section on Ways to Donate.
